Portfolio overview: Project Me

Cat becomes her

The fourth project made during Graduate Diploma CSM ( 2015-16).

'What do you surround yourself with? What would the most authentic, unashamedly fabulous version of yourself look like?'

Starting off with a stupid name and a proposition that was just too grand - like a dangerous mission on a sci-fi movie - Project Me was a chance to stop trying to be Fashion, and mix up my special blend of Kawaii Madness & Confusion to be added to my beloved everyday clothes.

A sense of familiarity was meant to be kept with instantly recognisable pieces - a varsity jacket, Breton shirts, a kilt - but with proportions, colours and motifs that only a cartoon character would wear.

"Just this one more project until I can do my final collection!"

With that emotional state, of course I was about to have a complete nervous breakdown.

I just had to do a fun collection about cats, flowers and cartoons, but I had no idea how to do that! After all, I prided myself on being such an ambitious, hardworking student with a VERY SERIOUS goal of making it big in Fashion.

Somehow I managed to present something, and even if this project wasn't a success then, it's what got me started with the Mean Red Kitty prints.

Took me 3 years to make a giant cat t-shirt...

It doesn't matter how great your idea is - if you're not ready to execute it.

A lot of my projects during Grad Dip were rushed, because my anxiety kept reminding me of the short time (either 3 or 4 weeks for each) I had to do something spectacular - how dare I suck shit, I'm at mothafucking CSM!!!

Over 4 years later, I'm still learning not to indulge in anxiety and to find joy in my work every day.

If you've ever felt like you're in a constant fight with your creativity, you know it's counterproductive.
